Masque rond, a circular wooden mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo associated with the Luba Songye cultures, from a private collection, in excellent condition and measuring 26 cm high, 1 cm deep and 1 cm wide.
Description from the seller
Round-faced mask, carved from dense wood with a dark patina, presenting the emblematic characteristics of the Kifwebe repertoire. The surface is entirely animated by a network of finely incised concentric striations radiating around the facial features, creating a powerful optical and rhythmic effect.
The face is structured around a prominent nasal ridge that divides the composition symmetrically. The eyes, narrow and almond-shaped, are outlined by broad orbital reliefs highlighted with light pigments, enhancing the intensity of the gaze. The rectangular mouth, deliberately reduced, extends toward a geometric chin adorned with a relief-carved grid pattern.
The balance between rounded volumes and graphic lines gives this work a particularly expressive presence. The contrasts between the brown-black patina of the wood and the whitish highlights reinforce the reading of the reliefs and underscore the sculpture's sophistication.
This type of mask was associated with initiatory societies and ceremonial performances where dance, movement and visual appearance formed an inseparable whole. The characteristic striations contributed to the dynamic effect sought during masked appearances.
The quality of the sculpture and the harmony of proportions testify to a mastered craftsmanship. The ensemble exudes a strong visual presence and an aesthetics immediately recognizable within Central African arts.
