Anthropomorphic mask titled Masque anthropomorphe, from the Binji Mbagani people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, provenance: Collection privée.
Description from the seller
Rare and ancient anthropomorphic mask from the Binji Mbagani cultural complex sculpted by the Bana Kambulu and used by the Bana Nkuba in the western Kasaï region, in the center of the Congo.
This mask presents a powerful aesthetics immediately recognizable by its taut volumes and dramatic expression, where every detail seems to participate in a ritual staging deeply anchored in local traditions.
The domed forehead dominates an elongated face structured around a protruding triangular nose, carved with remarkable economy of means. Narrow eyes slightly sunken under pronounced brow ridges create a particular intensity giving the gaze an almost hypnotic presence.
The mouth open with strongly projected contours accentuates the expressive character of the work, evoking sacred speech, breath, or invocation. The lower part of the face ends in a softly lined elongated tip, reinforcing the verticality of the mask and its sculptural elegance.
The crown of the head is adorned with a central ridge accompanied by small protrusions rhythmically marking the upper line; these coiffing elements contribute to the visual identity specific to productions from this region of the Kasaï.
The surface presents a deep dark patina with satin reflections, bearing witness to its authentic antiquity and prolonged ritual use.
In Bana Nkuba societies, these masks were used during initiation or community ceremonies where they played a mediating role between the living, the ancestors, and invisible forces.
Bana Kambulu sculpture is particularly appreciated for its balance between geometric stylization and expressive power, giving rise to rare works that are immediately identifiable.
Coming from the village of Mupoyi, this piece constitutes a remarkable testament to the sculptural traditions of central Congo and to the richness of Kasaï cultures.
A rare, expressive, and deeply inhabited work intended for demanding connoisseurs of ancient African art.
