Description from the seller
Marco with mounts, carved wood, Alfonsino style, early 20th century - Spain
Material: Carved wood
Style: Alfonsino
Period: Early 20th century
Country of origin: Spain
Minor faults that do not interfere with the overall viewing of the piece
Exterior dimensions: 101 x 80 cm.
Interior dimensions: 73 x 52 cm.
Beautiful carved wooden frame with square mounts in the corners, made in the early 20th century in Spain.
It features a black wood edge, a gilded wood frieze, a black wood back edge, and a mahogany-colored wooden edge. Richly decorated with vegetal and ornamental motifs, except on the innermost part. The mounts are an outward-facing ornament of the piece, like an ear or appendage, square or rectangular, protruding at the corners of the frame outline.
The Alfonsino style materializes in eclectic frames with mount and ovals structures, with a strong presence of vegetal scrolls and festoons of laurel leaves or fruit.
The Alfonsino style
The Alfonsino style was an artistic and decorative movement developed in Spain during the last third of the 19th century, primarily during the reign of Alfonso XII (1874-1885) and the consolidation of the Bourbon Restoration.
In general, it was heavily influenced by earlier styles, especially the Renaissance, both Spanish and French, though also by Neo-Gothic. During this period, furniture did not adhere to any specific norm, but originality was prioritized. However, it does share some common features. For example, it is decorated with a large amount of carvings and turnings. Dark woods and straight lines were preferred. It was common to consult repertoires of interior engravings from old times as a source of inspiration. A conservative aesthetic prevailed, influenced by academicism, historicisms (Neo-Byzantine, Neo-Romanesque, Neo-Murdéjar…) which gave rise to the pejorative term “remorse style.”
