The grip and parts of the shaft are made of dark, polished horn.
This organic material was often heat-formed in the 19th century and intricately carved.
The handle depicts the head of a mythological sea creature or a chimera.
It is finished in detail with inlaid eyes and visible teeth and tongue in the open mouth.
