Putti, XVIIth‑century Italian oil painting by Scuola italiana, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Italian School – Pair of important oval paintings with putti – 17th/18th century
Oil on canvas
Dimensions:
99 × 77 cm (with frame)
86.5 × 64 cm (without frame)
⸻
Suggestive pair of antique paintings in baroque taste depicting groups of putti suspended among clouds and drapery, characterized by a scenographic composition and an intense chiaroscuro layout of evident Italian lineage.
The works present notable decorative strength and a refined lighting setup, with figures constructed through soft tonal gradations and vigorous anatomies that recall the Emilian and Roman figurative culture of the seventeenth century, in particular the influence of Renian painting.
The oval format, particularly appreciated in aristocratic and ecclesiastical decoration between the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, gives the compositions a strong scenic elegance, heightened by the theatrical atmosphere and the profound rendering of shadows.
Particularly interesting is the volumetric construction of the putti, treated with a soft and dynamic painterly sensitivity, capable of creating an effective dialogue between light and matter. The warm tones of the flesh and the skillful articulation of the figures in space confer on the works a significant visual and ornamental impact.
Both paintings are housed in elegant gilded wooden frames of baroque taste.
The works have previously undergone conservation interventions and a lining was performed in a later period. There are slight distortions of the support, old paint retouches and localized varnishing visible in some points of the painted surface. However, these elements do not compromise the overall charm of the works, which retain a strong stage presence and an authentic antique atmosphere.
The frames visible in the photos are included as a courtesy and do not form part of the works. Any damage to the frames will not be a valid reason for claims or order cancellations.
Professional shipping carried out to measure, will use foam corner protectors, bubble wrap and other cushioning material to ensure maximum safety during transport.
