A hand-blown Roman balsamarium (unguentarium) in glass from the 1st–3rd century AD, 12 cm high and 6 cm wide, in good condition with some professionally restored ancient breaks, acquired from a private collection in the Netherlands in 2010.
Description from the seller
Roman balsamarium (unguentarium) – 1st-3rd century AD.
Imagine: a Roman lady in a villa somewhere in the Empire, who after bathing, with careful gestures, applies a precious fragrant oil or balm from this elegant little bottle. This graceful glass balsamarium was once a daily luxury item, used for perfume, salve, or cosmetics.
This hand-blown unguentarium has a slender, elongated body with a fine, tapering neck and a lightly rolled rim – typical of the Roman glassmaking tradition. The translucent glass shows a beautiful, natural iridescent sheen that has developed over the centuries.
Condition: The bottle is in good, attractive condition and is fully presentable. There are a few old cracks that have been professionally restored (visible upon close inspection, but not distracting to the overall piece). This is common with archaeological glass finds and does not diminish the charm and authenticity.
The bottle comes from a private collection.
Shipping from the Netherlands, well packed in bubble wrap.
