Description from the seller
Ancient icon depicting a triumphant saintly knight – late 18th / early 19th century - Spain
Icon painted in tempera on a wooden panel, depicting a saintly rider holding a red banner, featured in a scene of victory. The composition presents in the foreground a figure lying on the ground, presumably a defeated enemy, giving the whole piece an iconography of a protective or warrior saint.
The rider, dressed in a dark garment cinched with red, is mounted on a light-colored horse whose harnesses are accented with red pigments. A cross appears in the background, reinforcing the religious character of the scene.
In style, with free proportions and a popular treatment, the work belongs to devotional production of southern influence, possibly Iberian, evoking depictions of Saint James the Moor-slayer or of a military saint assimilated.
Dating: late 18th – early 19th century
Technique: tempera on panel
Origin: Southern Europe, Iberian influence
Significant wear, losses and alterations of the pictorial layer
