Description from the seller
Bronze candlestick holder – Saint Christopher carrying the Child Jesus – Flanders, 19th century
Rare bronze candlestick figurine of Saint Christopher carrying the Child Jesus on his shoulder. The saint is depicted walking, eyes closed, holding the staff (now partly incomplete at the upper part) which ended in a cup intended to receive the candle. The Child, blessing, rests on the saint's left shoulder. The whole rests on a wide circular base with a strong rim.
This typology belongs to a well-defined corpus, derived from the Mannleinleuchter produced from the end of the 15th century in the old Netherlands. These are the 'candle holders with figure' where the figure serves as the shaft bearer.
An identical specimen, dated around 1600–1630, is kept at Stoneacre (Kent, United Kingdom), inv. NT 863878, confirming the formal lineage of this model with early Nordic productions.
Solid casting, beautiful old brown-gold patina with wear and oxidation coherent.
Ancient missing part at the level of the upper cup. Signs of use inside the drip tray and on the plate, in line with the function.
The photos are an integral part of the object's description and complement its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.
