Description from the seller
JAPAN. 100 Mon. 1835-1870.
- Value: 100 Mon.
- Year: 1835-1870.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: 天保通寶. Reverse: 當百.
- Grade: MS62 (GBCA).
Bronze coin of large denomination corresponding to the Tenpō Tsūhō series, issued during the late Edo period as a measure to alleviate economic difficulties of the Tokugawa shogunate. It presents the characteristic oval shape with a central square hole, inspired by the Chinese monetary tradition. The obverse shows the vertical inscription “Tenpō Tsūhō” in a robust caligriphic style, while the reverse indicates the value “當百” (equivalent to one hundred mon), accompanied by a stylized mark at the bottom. The specimen preserves well-defined relief with sharp details in the characters, surfaces with original texture and a homogeneous brown patina with slight areas of greenish oxidation. A solid striking is evident with minor irregularities typical of the casting process, faithfully representing this type of currency widely circulated in premodern Japan.
Disclaimer: For orders shipped outside the European Union, I want to leave absolutely clear that I do ship from Spain, which means that if the package is sent to any country outside the European Union, and/or inside EU that has special tax agreement (example: Canary Islands), it might be stopped in your local customs and they might ask you to pay taxes. This is a customs legal procedure and it is completely out of our control. Thanks for your understanding.
