Description from the seller
Space Age Cult: Diablo Giganplast Pair 1970 – The Orange that Enchanted Brigitte Bardot" from Museum (MoMA Style)
Up for auction is a piece of Italian design history: a pair of Diablo stools produced by Giganplast in the 1970s. An explosion of vibrant orange color, an enduring symbol of Space Age aesthetics.
The Myth: From the Beaches of St. Tropez to Museums of the World
They are not just stools, but the Italian evolution of Henry Massonnet's famous Tam Tam.
When in 1969 Brigitte Bardot was photographed sitting on one of these plastic cones, the object instantly became a global must-have. Giganplast managed to reinterpret this concept with the Diablo model, creating a functional object that is today in the permanent collections of MoMA in New York and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
The Diablo stool draws inspiration from the hourglass silhouette of the Tam Tam, designed in 1968 by Frenchman Henry Massonnet.
Origin of the concept: Massonnet, an avid fisherman, initially created the stool as a light and portable seat for fishing.
Characteristics: The design consists of two hollow conical elements that fit together symmetrically.
It is made of injection-molded plastic (polypropylene), a material prized by Pop Art and the Space Age style for its affordability and versatility.
Pop Success: The model became a global fashion phenomenon after appearing in a 1969 photo that depicted actress Brigitte Bardot in her home.
Since then, companies such as the Italian Giganplast have produced similar variants such as the Diablo model and the Taormina set
See the photographs in the gallery, as one of the two stools shows a break on the seat lid that does not compromise its use.
The Producing Company: Giganplast
Founded in the 1950s by Francesco Gigante, Giganplast evolved by leveraging the potential of new plastic molding technologies. Although today it is more focused on professional products for catering and the food industry, in the 1970s it was a leader in producing accessible Space Age furniture for everyone
