Description from the seller

Rare carved wooden sculpture/reliquary, polychromed and gilded, representing very likely Saint Severus of Ravenna, Italian bishop of the 4th century.

The saint is depicted in bust with a red ribbed episcopal mitre, a finely featured face with a meditative expression, resting on a wall console with rich gilded Baroque decoration bearing the old inscription “Sᵀ SEVERIUS”.

Northern Italian work from the late 18th century or early 19th century, in the popular Baroque taste.

Saint Severus was especially venerated for his great piety and his miraculous election as bishop according to Christian tradition.

Dimensions: Height: 56 cm x Width: 30 cm x Depth: 16 cm

Condition commensurate with age, showing wear, chips, losses of polychromy and visible old fittings. Very beautiful decorative presence and authentic.
