French ormolu-bronze console clock, 8-day mechanical movement, striking on the hour and half hour with multiple bells, dating to ca. 1810–1820, 42 cm high, 31 cm wide, 11 cm deep, weighing 6 kg, with winding key, three-piece lot, in good used condition with patina, front glass missing.
Description from the seller
Important French mantel clock (Pendule de Paris) datable to the first half of the 19th century (circa 1810-1820), realized in high-quality mercury gilded bronze (Ormolu).
The case, of architectural rectangular shape, is enriched with finely chased bronze appliques featuring vegetal motifs, volutes and classicizing friezes, typical of Parisian production at the beginning of the 19th century. The gilding, while showing a natural patina of time, preserves remarkable brightness and a scenographic presence of great elegance.
The circular dial presents Roman numerals and is framed by a gilded bronze bezel, showing a significant patina of time and a natural superficial oxidation, coherent with the object's era (early 19th century).
This characteristic, while reducing the legibility of the numerals in some parts, attests to its absolute authenticity and to the clock's original, unrestored condition. The clock is lacking the front glass for closure, as is often the case with pieces of this antiquity.
The original mechanism stamped with the mark “M.B” and serial number 403, testifies to the quantity of the French manufacture of the period. Key and pendulum present.
Mechanical movement clock with eight-day manual winding and striking on the hours and half-hours at the passing of the bells.
The summit is crowned by a gilded bronze sculpture depicting a rearing horse, accompanied at the base by a stretched-out little dog. A dynamic and refined composition, symbolizing strength and fidelity, highly appreciated in the Neoclassical and proto-empire taste. The horse figure is modeled in the round, with harmonious proportions and meticulous detail.
The clock is in working order, serviced, and presents in good conservation condition, with no breakages or structural absences. Note that the pendulum has been fixed with a blue thread recently.
The clock is lacking the front closure glass, as is often the case with pieces of this antique. Additionally, the rear movement cover is present but needs restoration: due to some dents along the profile and a slight deformation, it does not fit into its seat. It is nevertheless delivered together with the clock.
The object is part of my private collection and was purchased in the 1980s from an antique dealer in Florence.
Measurements: height about 42 cm, width about 31 cm, depth about 11 cm. Weight about 6 kg.
