Description from the seller
Congo (R.D.C.)
Songyé
Wood and pigments
Height: 49 cm; maximum width: 23.5 cm; depth: 14.5
SONGYE MASK, KIFWEBE
Representing a stylized anthropomorphic face. The mask has the peculiarity of having a carved frontal horn.
It is decorated with broad parallel stripes outlined by white and black pigments.
Hard wood (weight: 1,150 g)
Used patina
Note the absence of holes around the mask, except two holes on the axis of the median ridge.
The absence of holes for attaching the raffia costume shows that this mask did not have the function of a kifwébé dance mask. Willy Mestach in his study "Etude Songyé" Munich, Galerie Jahn 1985, notes that this type of mask was used ritually as a "fetish mask or house mask".
