Description from the seller

This is a Russian Orthodox icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.
The icon shows the classical composition characteristic of 19th-century Russian iconography.
Central figure: Saint Nicholas. Depicted as a bishop with a richly ornate mitre (crown) and a liturgical vestment (omophorion) with crosses. With his right hand he makes a blessing gesture, and in his left hand he holds the closed Gospel book.
Flanking figures: in the clouds upper left is Jesus Christ depicted handing the gospel, and upper right Mary (Mother of God) holding the episcopal omophorion.
The technique: Tsjekanka (Chiseled relief work)
What makes this icon particularly decorative is that the gold is not flat. The detailed patterns in the background and in the halos are made with a technique called TSJEKANKA.
Some light damage as seen in the photo.
Belgian private collection.
