Une sphère armillaire est une sphère céleste avec des anneaux métalliques qui représentent les principaux cercles du ciel.

La sphère armillaire a été inventée par Ératosthène en 255 av. J.-C. Le nom de l'instrument vient du latin « armilla », qui signifie bracelet. Habituellement, la Terre, puis le Soleil, sont placés au centre de cercles métalliques.
Les plans de l'horizon, du méridien et de l'équateur céleste sont représentés par des cercles pleins. La sphère armillaire a été conçue comme un instrument permettant de déterminer la position ou le temps.

Les scientifiques de la Renaissance se représentaient souvent avec une sphère armillaire, symbole de sagesse et de connaissance. Dans l'iconographie chrétienne, la sphère armillaire est l'attribut de l'astronomie, l'un des sept arts libéraux et un symbole de l'univers. Cet instrument figure sur le drapeau du Portugal.
