Two bronze mortars with pestles in an antique Flemish/Dutch style, estimated period 1850–1900, with a height of about 10.5 cm, a top diameter of 12.5 cm and a total weight around 2.5 kg.
Description from the seller
Old bronze mortar with pestle – inscription “LOF GODT VAN AL A 1641” – possible 17th century or 19th century / Flemish-Dutch style
Old bronze/brass mortar with its pestle, richly decorated with relief vegetal motifs and two finely worked zoomorphic side handles.
The upper part bears an ancient inscription: “LOF ◇ GODT ◇ VAN ◇ AL ◇ A ◇ 1641”. This phrase, in ancient Dutch/Flemish, can be interpreted as a religious praise meaning roughly: “Praise to God above all.”
The date 1641 is inscribed on the object. Considering its style, form, decoration, patina and inscription, it is possible that this mortar is from the 17th century or that it was later made based on an old Flemish/Dutch model. The object is therefore presented with caution as an ancient mortar, possibly from the 17th century, or inspired by a 17th-century design.
The mortar shows a beautiful antique patina, with signs of use, oxidation and natural aging. The interior also shows signs of use and a green oxidation typical of old bronze/brass objects.
The pestle is massive, with a double rounded end, and complements the set perfectly.
Beautiful decorative and collectible piece, ideal for lovers of antique objects, folk art, old pharmacy, historical cuisine or cabinet of curiosities decoration.
