Description from the seller
Elegant sterling silver writing desk set, crafted around the mid-20th century by the renowned Spanish goldsmith Pedro Durán. On a rectangular base of repoussé and chiseled silver with vegetal motifs, two swan-shaped interlocking inkwells rise, supporting, as monumental fountain-pen nibs, two plugs of solid silver. The perimeter border of garlands and the four leaf-shaped pierced feet add a refined balance between functionality and modernist aesthetics.
Pedro Durán (Madrid, 1884–1961) was a Spanish goldsmith and jeweler, founder of Casa Durán in 1910. Trained in Madrid’s goldsmithing schools, he stood out for merging Baroque historicism with modernist lines. His sterling silver, always marked with his hallmark and the 925‰ contrast, won prizes at the National Expositions of Decorative Arts in 1929 and 1936. After his death, the family firm keeps his artisanal tradition alive, adapting it to contemporary designs.
