Emerald is a dark- to light-green variety of the silicate mineral beryl with the chemical composition Al2Be3[Si6O18]. The color of emerald, whose variation ranges from a dark blue-green to a pale yellow-green, is caused by small impurities of chromium (Cr3+) and vanadium ions (V3+).
As the pure mineral beryl crystallizes, emerald also crystallizes in the hexagonal system and typically develops hexagonal, prismatic to columnar crystals with a vitreous luster on the surfaces. Its Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 is comparable to that of beryl.
