Black opals, like their differently colored counterparts, occur as round to nodular masses with no recognizable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only after the polishing of this material. Characteristic for this form of opals is their opalescence, which appears as an intense rainbow shimmer. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it this name.

Black opals form, like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sediments or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic sheen is due to water inclusions inside the mineral.
