Malachite, also known as copper malachite as well as malachite green or copper green, is a mineral from the class of 'carbonates and nitrates' with the chemical composition Cu2[(OH)2|CO3][4]. It is chemically a basic copper carbonate.
Malachite crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, but it very rarely forms visible crystals with the naked eye, with needle-like to prismatic habit. It is usually found in massive or botryoidal, banded aggregates in pure green color in variations from pale to dark green.
Already Pliny the Elder (23/24–79) described malachite in his work Naturalis Historia. The name derives via the Latin molochitis probably from the Greek word μαλάχη, in Ancient Greek pronunciation maláchē for “mallow.” The color of the stone is said to remind of the strong green of leaves.
Already in ancient Greece, in ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire, the mineral was extremely popular. The Egyptians carved various objects from malachite, such as amulets and scarabs, and processed the finely ground mineral into expressive eyeshadow. That malachite, contrary to earlier assumptions, was not the basis of the green color in wall paintings in ancient Egyptian tombs appears very likely due to newer research.
