Santa Orando, an oil on panel painting from 16th‑century Italy by the Italian School, depicting a saint praying, signed by hand, with a carved gilt wooden frame, and measuring 83.5 x 56 cm with frame.
Description from the seller
Title: Saint in Prayer
School: Italian (XVI-XVII)
Style: Late Renaissance / Devotional
Technique: Oil on panel
The present work represents a Saint in Prayer in a composition of marked spiritual and contemplative character, typical of Italian religious painting of the 16th-17th century. The saint appears standing, holding an open book between her hands while directing her gaze upward in a state of ecstasy and mystical recollection. The scene conveys a deep devotional charge through the serenity of the gesture and the sobriety of the composition.
The artist employs a restrained palette dominated by dark and earthy tones, contrasted with the intense red mantle that envelops the figure and provides verticality and visual drama to the scene. The soft lighting gently models the face and hands, emphasizing the saint's introspective expression. The neutral background, barely sketched, focuses all attention on the main figure, following the classic schemes of Italian religious painting of the transitional period between Mannerism and the first Baroque naturalism.
The work shows restorations, in accordance with its age.
The frame, carved and gilded wood, presents a classical structure of stepped moldings and sober finish, adequately complementing the historical and religious character of the painting.
Measurements: 69.5 x 45 cm
Measurements with frame: 83.5 x 56 cm
