Historic Medieval English Silver "Short Cross" Penny – King Henry III
Fantastic piece of medieval English history: a genuine hammered silver "Short Cross" penny struck during the early reign of King Henry III. This specific coin is a Class VIIb issue dating to circa 1222-1236.
The obverse features the classic stylized, crowned, and facing bust of the King. The reverse displays the iconic "Short Cross" voided with quatrefoils in each angle. The clear lettering on the reverse legend identifies the moneyer as Willem at the Canterbury mint! (This "Short Cross" design preceded the "Long Cross" type, making it an excellent historical companion piece).
This 800-year-old hammered silver coin has survived in wonderful condition! It boasts a nice, clear strike with pleasing details on both the King's portrait and the central cross, complemented by a lovely, natural antique silver patina.
