Description from the seller
For sale is an exceptionally large and magnificently designed porcelain bowl from the renowned house Haviland & Co. (Limoges, France). The bowl captivates with its organic, flowing form and sculpted Rocaille handles in the transition from late Historicism to early Art Nouveau.
This is a masterfully hand-painted unique piece from the era of the China Decorating Movement. The exterior shows a vivid, colorful depiction of climbing nasturtium (Nasturtium) and delicate insects. The interior is asymmetrical with filigreed, gray-green reed grasses in an Asian style. The wavy rim is lavishly rolled in glossy gold.
Marking & Documentation (see photos):
Ground mark: Green underglaze stamp “H & C° / L / FRANCE” (factory mark of Haviland for the period 1888–1896).
Painter’s signature: On the reverse meticulously hand-monogrammed “MB.” and exactly dated 29/5. 1893.
Dimensions:
Length x Width: approx. 29 cm x 24 cm. Height: approx. 10 cm
For its age of over 130 years the bowl remains in an excellent, collectible condition. The porcelain has no chips, cracks, or hairline fractures. The opulent gold rim is superbly preserved and shows hardly any wear. The colors of the hand-painting are fresh and vivid.
