The mineral Topaz is an island silicate with the chemical composition Al2[6][(F,OH)2|SiO4]. The fluoride (F) and hydroxide ions (OH) shown in round brackets can substitute for each other in the formula (substitution, diadochy), but they always occur in the same proportions relative to the other constituents of the mineral. A fluoride-free OH-analog is known as a synthetic compound.
Topaz crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically forms well-developed, sometimes very flat crystals with short- to long-prismatic or columnar habit and a vitreous luster on the surfaces. In pure form it is colorless and transparent. Due to multiple light refractions caused by lattice defects or polycrystalline growth, it can appear white and, with trace impurities, take on colors ranging from yellow, pink, to brownish-red, violet, light blue, and light green, with transparency correspondingly decreasing.
