No. 104046432

Sasanian Bronze Bowl (No reserve price)
A finely cast and hammered Sasanian bronze bowl featuring a hemispherical container with a rounded base. Its slightly convex walls slant upwards, leading to a wide mouth. The rim is reinforced with a band of slightly thicker bronze, creating a subtle ridge alongside a horizontal incised band below the mouth on the interior. Earthly encrustations and a green patina to the surface.
The Sassanians or Sasanians succeeded the Achaemenid Persians, establishing an Empire which, at its peak, expanded from the Euphrates to the Indus Rivers and included modern-day Armenia and Georgia. Sassanian art borrowed from Near Eastern and Greco-Roman traditions, and adapted the significance of these cultures’ iconography to the local repertoire.
Measurements: (circa) D 13.7cm x H 4.2cm
Provenance: Ex London collection of Near Eastern objects, pre 1996.
