Description from the seller
Dogon ladders are utilitarian and symbolic instruments used by the Dogon people, primarily residing in the Bandiagara Cliff region in Mali. These ladders, often made from local woods such as millet and the fig tree, are known for their simple and functional design. They are used to reach the elevated granaries where grains and other provisions are stored, essential in an agricultural society where food security is crucial.
Beyond their practical utility, Dogon ladders carry deep cultural and ritual significance. They are often decorated with geometric patterns and sacred symbols, representing the spiritual beliefs and cosmology of the Dogon. The ladders are used in rituals and ceremonies associated with agriculture and food security, thus underscoring their importance in preserving ancestral traditions and the knowledge transmitted from generation to generation within the Dogon community.
