Elegant letter postal scale dating from the 1920s, made of gilt brass with a polished wood base. This model, with a typically British taste, features a balanced-arm frame with a circular plate for the mail and a side support for calibrated counterweights.
The inscription “TO WEIGH 8 OZ” and the weights stamped “GPO” (General Post Office) indicate official postal or office use for weighing letters and small parcels up to 8 ounces. The original counterweights — 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz and 4 oz — allowed precise measurement of the postage rates of the era.
