The SMC Pentax-A 1:2 28 mm is an extremely rare, bright manual wide-angle lens produced by Pentax between 1984 and 1988. This lens has achieved a true cult status among lovers of vintage glass. This is partly due to its optical similarity to the legendary Zeiss Distagon 28mm f/2 "Hollywood." Thanks to the "A" setting on the diaphragm ring, the lens works flawlessly with modern Pentax DSLRs in automatic exposure modes.
Focal length: 28 mm (75° field of view on full-frame)
Max. aperture: f/2.0 (very bright for its time)
Min. aperture: f/22
Optical design: 8 elements in 7 groups
Filter size: 49 mm
Minimum focusing distance: 30 centimeters
Weight: 215 grams
Image quality: Fully open at f/2 the lens has a soft, somewhat "dreamy" character with reduced sharpness at the edges. From f/2.8 and f/4 sharpness increases in the center, and around f/5.6 to f/11 the lens delivers excellent performance across the frame.
Colors and contrast: Thanks to the acclaimed Pentax Super Multi-Coating (SMC), the lens delivers deep contrasts and a rich, vibrant color rendition.
Mechanical build: The lens is very compact and fully made of metal and glass. The focus ring turns smoothly and precisely.
Value and rarity:
The f/2 version is scarce and on the second-hand market (depending on condition) often sells for substantial amounts from owner to owner.
The current market value of an SMC Pentax-A 1:2 28 mm in perfect condition (mint/excellent) generally lies between €300 and €450, driven by its rarity and cult status.
When there is dust inside the lens, the market value is estimated to drop to €200 to €280, depending on the severity and exact location of the dust particles.
Minimal impact on photos: A few loose specks of dust inside a vintage lens have virtually no impact on the final image quality. With wide-angle lenses they are rarely noticeable unless you stop down extremely (e.g., at f/16 or f/22) against a uniform, bright background.
