Description from the seller
General
From a private collection, this exclusive and highly collectible Volvo 780 Bertone Coupé from 1988 is offered. This top model represents a beautiful collaboration between Swedish reliability and Italian craftsmanship, as the car was designed and hand-built by the renowned design house Bertone in Turin, Italy. Between 1986 and 1991, exactly 8,518 Volvo 780s were produced worldwide. It is estimated that today only about 1,500 to 2,500 remain globally, the majority of which are equipped with a diesel or V6 engine. This particular example, however, features the highly coveted 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder Turbo 'Red Block' engine, making it a rare, reliable, and value-stable sight on the classic car market. The car currently carries Belgian registration and offers a unique opportunity for both collectors and enthusiasts of special classics.
Body and Paint
The exterior of this classic coupé is finished in the extremely classy and timeless dark blue metallic color. The car is in very well-kept condition, and the paint has a beautiful, deep shine. Only light signs of use are visible, fully in line with the car’s age and mileage. The underside of the vehicle and the engine bay are notably clean, solid, and structurally in good condition. The distinctive, clean lines of the Bertone design are perfectly straight, and the lighting system also functions correctly.
Technical
Mechanically, this Volvo 780 is in excellent condition. The legendary 2.3i Turbo Red Block engine runs beautifully and is paired with a smoothly shifting four-speed automatic transmission with electric overdrive. The braking system functions perfectly, and the car offers the stable, comfortable road manners one expects from Volvo’s flagship. The coupé is fitted around with high-quality Pirelli tires that still retain roughly 80 percent of their original tread.
To ensure optimal reliability, the car has recently undergone major maintenance. The timing belt and water pump were renewed, and the spark plugs and complete ignition were replaced. The injectors have been ultrasonically cleaned, and the engine oil along with the oil filter have been changed. Additionally, the water-cooled Garrett turbocharger has been proactively fully rebuilt by a recognized specialist, bringing the technology completely up-to-date.
Interior
The cabin is upholstered with a luxurious, period-correct blue leather interior that harmonizes beautifully with the dark blue metallic bodywork. The entire interior is in very neat and well-maintained condition, underscoring the high material quality Bertone employed for this exclusive model. The car is richly equipped with various luxury comfort features, including effective climate control and remote central locking, making travel in this grand tourer especially pleasant.
Documents
The Volvo has a valid technical inspection and is registered in Belgium. This Belgian registration document makes it considerably easier to register the car in most EU countries. It is the buyer’s responsibility to check the specific registration rules in their own country, but the seller is of course fully prepared to assist with the necessary documentation or the preparation of export papers.
Collection
The car is being sold as-is, as this is a private sale under applicable “as is” terms. Interested parties are warmly invited to view this beautiful time capsule in person and take an extensive test drive before placing a bid. Arranging a viewing or having an independent expert conduct a pre-purchase inspection is, of course, possible. After the successful conclusion of the sale, the buyer is responsible for transport and collection of the vehicle.
Other Information
This rare Swedish-Italian coupé is being offered with a very complete package, including the original toolkit, one set of keys, and a USB drive containing extensive technical information and the official owners’ and workshop manuals. As the Volvo 780 Bertone’s low survival numbers and the indestructible Red Block technology increasingly gain appreciation among international collectors, this is a unique and stylish alternative to the more common late-80s luxury classics.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
