Description from the seller
An Icon of Elegance and History: Silverplate and Portoro Marble Inkwell.
This superb antique inkwell, a work of craftsmanship from the early 20th century, embodies the splendor and sophisticated style typical of the Piedmontese Savoyard bourgeoisie of that golden historical period.
The inkwell stands out for a sumptuous base in precious Portoro marble, quarried in the evocative Spezia region. Characterized by a rich, deep texture, the marble offers shades of black and brown, enriched by golden veins that capture the eye. This solid and stable base has been elegantly wrapped by a silverplate mount, embellished with floral details and intricate fluting, reflecting the mastery of the silversmiths of the era.
The inkwell is complete with two glass nibs or bottles, designed to hold inks of different colors. Each bottle is topped with a silverplate cap, adding another touch of luxury and refinement to the ensemble. The two bottles are symmetrically positioned on the marble base, creating a harmonious visual balance.
A detail that makes this object even more fascinating is the small ventilation hole in the lid of one of the nibs, a functional and historically accurate feature.
For design integrity, the inkwell bears no obvious engravings or marks, but this does not diminish its historical and artistic value. On the contrary, its simplicity and formal purity enhance its timeless elegance.
This inkwell, in excellent condition for its age, would fit perfectly in any antique office or desk, bringing a piece of history and a touch of luxury. With its timeless design and outstanding craftsmanship, this inkwell represents a valuable investment for any collector of antique pieces and a high-value, fascinating decor element.
