Description from the seller
Moroccan Berber rug
Estimated age: Mid-20th century (about 1950–1970)
Materials: Wool
Historical significance: Berber rugs, including those in the Boucherouite style, reflect a rich tradition of oral artistic and artisanal heritage of Morocco's indigenous communities. They served not only as floor coverings but also as educational tools to transmit stories, beliefs and cultural symbols to younger generations. Each rug is unique, reflecting the personality and experience of the weaver.
The Boucherouite style is known for its use of recycled materials, often fabric scraps, making it a precursor to the sustainable development movement in crafts. The motifs of Berber rugs are often symbolic, representing elements of nature, fertility, protection or spiritual beliefs. Although traditionally made by women for domestic use, Berber rugs have become highly sought on the international market of art and interior decoration. The bright colors and bold patterns, sometimes asymmetrical, are characteristic of Boucherouite rugs.
Origin: Morocco
Restoration tips: Gentle professional cleaning to avoid damaging natural fibers and dyes. Avoid direct sun exposure to prevent fading. For frayed threads, it is advised to carefully tuck them in with a needle and thread matching the color of the original. If the fringes are damaged, they can be carefully redone by a specialized artisan.
Style: Boucherouite (can also be considered a Moroccan tribal or rural style)
