Description from the seller
Description
Among the areas new light has been shed upon are: the lives of all the members of this illustrious family; the supposed invention of oil painting by Jan; and the brothers' collaboration on the masterwork The Ghent Altarpiece (The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb). Special attention is given to Jan, the better-known of the two; an extensive listing and analysis of his paintings is presented.
SHORT SUMMARY
Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441) was a painter from the County of Loon, which from 1366 belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. He is regarded, alongside Rogier van der Weyden, as one of the leading representatives of the Flemish Primitives. Among his best-known works is the polyptych The Ghent Altarpiece (1432), to be viewed in Saint Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent. Hubert was his brother. This book attempts to distinguish the personalities of Hubert and Jan and thus to humanize the mystification surrounding their persons and works.
This book was written by Elisabeth Dhanens (1915–2014), a Belgian art historian, specializing in the art of the Flemish Primitives, and more particularly in the works of the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck.
The hardcover book in green half-linen with gold embossing and cloth cover is housed in a slipcase. The book contains 400 pages with many reproductions in color and black-and-white to scale, and some are fold-out. It is an edition by Mercatorfonds, Antwerp 1980.
