IT:
Splendid and rare bedside holy water font (or for the bed) with crucifix, superb example of domestic sacred art in full Liberty Style / Art Nouveau, dating to around 1895-1910.
The piece stands out for the extraordinary fluidity of its lines and the elegant organic symbolism typical of the period. At the top of the cross stand three magnificent stylized poppy capsules with sinuous “whiplash” stems – an iconic Art Nouveau element symbolizing sleep and eternal rest. The figure of Christ shows a soft plasticity, elegantly integrated with the floral and vegetal motifs in the background.
The structure is made of finely cast and chased bronze, characterized by a splendid contrast between the original gilding of the relief parts and the deep dark patina of the background. The whole is mounted on a shaped base covered in contemporaneous fabric, complete with its original hanging ring on the back.
The holy water basin retains inside fascinating lime-scale encrustations and green-blue oxidation left by the evaporation of water over decades, bearing witness to its authenticity and history. A collector’s piece of great visual impact, beautifully preserved and never restored to maintain its integrity and vintage charm.
