Larimar is a blue-white veined variety of pectolite, previously detected only at two localities: in an altered ultrabasic volcanic rock on the Barahona Peninsula in the Dominican Republic and at the “Fittà” near Soave in Italy. Larimar has nothing to do with the blue amber also found on Hispaniola, which is processed in the same facilities in Puerto Plata and in the same manner as pectolite.
Larimar was only discovered in 1974 (the claim that Larimar was already known to the island’s indigenous inhabitants is a legend) and has been commercially used as a gemstone since the early 1980s. Compared with white pectolite, Larimar is harder (up to 6 on the Mohs scale) and occurs exclusively in dense, fine-crystalline aggregates. The sky-blue color is due to trace amounts of vanadium (not copper, since there are copper-free Larimar specimens); in addition, there are green varieties whose color is presumably due to lattice defects.
