Description from the seller

Antique "Memento Mori" crucifix on a pedestal. It is made of darkened wood (often pear or ebony) with a silvered or metal corpus of Christ.

This crucifix contains specific symbolism:

Skull with crossed bones: This is located directly beneath Christ's feet and has a double meaning:

Golgotha: It refers to the place of the crucifixion, which means "Place of the Skull."

Adam: According to tradition, Christ was crucified at the place where Adam lay buried. The skull symbolizes Adam, whereby Christ's blood flowed over the remains of the first man as a sign of redemption from original sin.

Memento Mori: The literal translation is "Remember to die." In religious context it serves as a reminder of the transience of earthly life and Christ's victory over death.

Relic holder: The decorative base (at the bottom of the foot) suggests that this type of crucifix sometimes also served as a reliquary, in which a small holy object or keepsake could be stored.

In good condition for its age, (mid to late 19th century). Light signs of wear, see photos.

Carefully packed and shipped.
