Italian school (XX) - San Gennaro

This painting depicts Saint Januarius, the patron saint of Naples, portrayed in a moment of contemplation. The style is attributable to the Neapolitan school of the 17th century, characterized by strong contrasts of light and intense emotion typical of the Baroque. A similar version of the work is attributed to the Baroque painter Luca Giordano and is located in the Complesso Monumentale dei Girolamini in Naples. Some modern variants of this subject were also created during the 20th century, keeping alive the iconographic tradition.
