Description from the seller
Empire-Style Mahogany Dressing Mirror, 19th Century
A refined 19th-century Empire-style dressing mirror, finely constructed in mahogany or mahogany veneer, with a fixed oval mirror plate set within a broad rounded frame. The piece rests on a rectangular architectural support with side uprights and a stepped plinth base, giving it a balanced and stately neoclassical presence.
The mirror is richly embellished with gilt classical ornamentation, including a seated figure with lyre to the crest, floral rosettes, urn motifs, laurel wreaths, torches, and an impressive central chariot-and-horse relief to the lower panel. These decorative mounts, executed in a combination of gilt bronze/brass and gilt carved wood, lend the piece a strong Empire character and a highly decorative appeal.
The oval mirror plate retains a beautifully aged surface, with extensive foxing and desilvering that creates a distinctive antique patina. The reverse shows wooden backing boards, metal support brackets, nails, and slotted screws, all contributing to the historic character of the piece.
A decorative and atmospheric antique mirror, ideal for a classical interior, collector’s setting, or as a statement piece in an elegant hallway, bedroom, dressing room, or antique display.
In antique condition, with wear consistent with age and use. The mirror plate is heavily foxed/desilvered. There are surface marks, scratches, small losses, minor dents, oxidation to metal elements, wear to gilding, old repairs, and age-related imperfections throughout. The mirror is fixed and not adjustable. The structure appears complete.
Depending on the buyer’s distance, it will be shipped via a specialized courier or delivered personally.
