Description from the seller
Large Altarpalm Holder (Urn) - Carved and Gilded Wood - Sicily, Italy - First Half of the 19th Century
Object Description
Refined altarpiece urn (palm holder) of Sicilian manufacture, dating to the first half of the 19th century (full Neoclassical/Empire period).
The piece, of notable size (40 cm in height), is made of finely carved wood, plastered and finished with the method of gold leaf gilding. The structure features a vasiform (urn-shaped) body, enriched with elegant volute handles and acanthus at the base, typical of the architectural taste of the era. It rests on a solid square base (plinth), also gilded.
This type of furniture was originally intended to adorn the steps of church altars or the patron chapels of central Sicily, serving as a support for blessed palms or floral arrangements.
