Description from the seller

Russian Orthodox Brass Pendant Icon of Saint John – 18th/19th century

Particular Russian Orthodox brass pendant icon with a representation of Saint John, rendered in relief. This small devotional object was worn as a personal protection symbol and belongs to the traditional Russian Orthodox portable icons popular among believers and pilgrims.

Description
The icon shows Saint John centrally, with a nimbus, depicted in an expressive and stylized form within an architectural frame. The saint is portrayed in a contemplative pose, typical for Orthodox depictions of John as evangelist and spiritual witness. The surrounding architectural elements possibly refer to a sacred or symbolic setting.

The scene is executed in relief with a sober but powerful composition, characteristic of early-Russian Orthodox portable icons. At the top there is an integrated eyelet for hanging, by which the object was originally worn on a cord or chain.

The brass surface has developed a beautiful dark patina through age, which gives the relief extra depth and character. Such small pendant icons were used as personal devotionals and protective objects during travel and pilgrimages.
