Description from the seller
Russian Orthodox brass icon with seven saint depictions and polychrome enamel – 19th century
Notable Russian Orthodox brass icon with multiple saint figures in relief, executed against a decorative background with green, yellow and white enamel. This type of icon was used as a personal devotional object and home icon within the Orthodox faith tradition.
Description
The icon shows seven saint figures grouped within an architecturally constructed composition. The figures are provided with halos and partly accompanied by Cyrillic inscriptions. On the lower right is a female saint depicted with a cross attribute, possibly a martyr or patron saint, flanked by smaller saint figures.
The background is richly filled with green, yellow and white enamel, which forms a vivid contrast with the warm brass relief. The expressive design and compact composition are typical of Russian cast icons from the 19th century. Such icons were produced in specialized ateliers and served as aids for personal prayer and spiritual protection.
At the top there is an integrated hanging hole, suitable for the original use as a portable or wall icon. Due to age and use the enamel shows clear wear and losses, giving the object an authentic historical character.
Period
19th century
Material
Brass with multicolor enamel
Origin
Russia
Condition
In reasonable condition with appropriate age- and use-related marks. The enamel shows clear wear and localized losses appropriate to its age. The brass has developed a fine natural patina. See photos for your own impression.
