Russian Orthodox brass icon of the Mother of God 'Life-Giving Spring' (Zoodochos Pege) with blue enamel – 19th century
Beautiful Russian Orthodox brass icon featuring a depiction of the Mother of God 'Life-Giving Spring' (Zoodochos Pege), rendered in relief and adorned with blue enamel. This type of icon belongs to the beloved Marian depictions within the Orthodox tradition and symbolizes healing, protection, and spiritual renewal.
Description
The icon centrally shows the Mother of God with raised hands in prayer, flanked by kneeling believers and angel figures. Above Her appears Christ in a heavenly mandorla with a blessing gesture. The composition references Orthodox iconography of the 'Life-Giving Spring,' in which Mary is venerated as the source of healing and divine grace.
The background is partly accented with blue enamel, creating a beautiful contrast with the warm brass relief. The floral motifs and graceful lines enhance the spiritual and decorative appearance of the object.
The icon is executed in fine relief with expressive figures and a compact composition, typical of Russian cast icons from the 19th century. At the top there is a built-in hanging hole, suitable for original use as a household icon or personal devotional object.
