Description from the seller

Russian Orthodox brass icon of Saint George and the Dragon – 19th century

Beautiful Russian Orthodox brass icon depicting Saint George on horseback slaying the dragon, executed in relief. This type of icon belongs to the beloved saintly depictions within the Orthodox tradition and symbolizes the victory of good over evil.

Description
The icon shows Saint George the Victorious seated on a prancing horse, while he pierces the dragon with a spear. The depiction is framed by a geometric decorative frame and equipped with Cyrillic inscriptions at the top. The dynamic composition and powerful symbolism made this depiction particularly popular within the Russian Orthodox faith culture.

Saint George is the patron saint of courage, struggle and spiritual victory. Such icons were used as personal devotional objects, protection icons, or domestic icons.

The brass surface has developed a beautiful dark patina with age, giving the relief extra depth and character. The sober yet expressive execution is typical of Russian cast icons from the 19th century, produced in specialized workshops.

At the top there is an integrated hanging ring, suitable for its original use as a wall icon or portable devotional object.
