Description from the seller
Large Processional Crucifix in Argentated Brass and Bronze – Umbertine Style, Late 19th Century.
Fascinating and imposing ancient crucifix of large size (58x38 cm), originally conceived as a processional cross on a stand for processional use or as a significant liturgical furnishing. The piece is a fine example of sacral art from the end of the nineteenth century, linked to the Umbertine style, characterized by a refined eclecticism that blends structural sobriety with figurative realism.
The cross is made of brass with an original period argentation that today presents a splendid natural patina, “lived”; at the points of greatest relief the warmth of the underlying brass emerges, a detail that authenticates its era and history. The tubular structure is enriched by milled terminals in the shape of an ampulla and completed, at the top, by a raised cartouche “INRI,” forged in the form of a rolled parchment scroll.
The Corpus Domini is a bronze casting of excellent artisanal workmanship, characterized by academic realism that emphasizes anatomical details and the soft drapery of the loincloth. On the reverse side the original mechanical mounts and period welds are clearly visible. The lower part ends with a sturdy cup-shaped insert, designed for insertion onto a processional staff or onto a monumental base.
The item is presented in good conservational condition, intact in every part and unrestored, thus preserving all the charm of an authentic antique piece. A visually striking option for collectors of religious militaria, sacred art, or for those seeking a decor element with strong historical character.
