A Mumuye Iagalagana sculpture, Nigeria, Jalingo State region. Remnants of a sacrification patina, incl. stand.

The Mumuye sculpture from the Jalingo region in northeastern Nigeria is a distinctive example of abstract, spiritually potent art produced by the Mumuye people, who inhabit present-day Taraba State. These wooden sculptures—typically elongated, with simplified features and dynamic proportions—are used in a range of ritual contexts, primarily by secret societies responsible for maintaining social order, healing, and ancestral veneration. The figures, known as iagalagana, are believed to act as intermediaries between the spiritual and physical worlds, often kept in family or communal shrines to protect against illness, misfortune, or moral disorder.

Characterized by a vertical emphasis, long necks, arched torsos, and sharply defined limbs, Mumuye sculptures appear abstract yet are highly symbolic. While the heads are often small and stylized, the attention to posture and line reflects the importance of spiritual presence rather than realistic portrayal. Some figures were believed to house ancestral spirits, while others were used in divination or invoked for agricultural fertility and protection. Unlike more naturalistic styles in neighboring regions, Mumuye sculpture values formal tension and conceptual design, embodying both aesthetic restraint and spiritual potency. As scholar Eberhard Fischer observed, “The Mumuye sculptor expresses energy not by action but by the tension of form—frozen motion rendered visible” (Fischer & Himmelheber, 1964).

The Jalingo region, now part of Taraba State, lies between the Benue River basin and the Adamawa Highlands—a geographically diverse and culturally rich area. The Mumuye, along with neighboring groups like the Chamba and Jukun, lived in relatively isolated hill communities, which helped preserve their distinct religious and artistic traditions. Organized without centralized kingship, Mumuye society relied on age-grade associations, diviners, and ritual specialists who often commissioned or used sculpture in their practices. The rugged terrain and cultural autonomy of the region allowed highly individualized and abstract sculptural forms to flourish well into the 20th century.
In summary, a Mumuye sculpture from Jalingo is far more than a visual object—it is a spiritual tool, a mediator between worlds, and a symbol of community integrity in a society where art serves vital ritual, moral, and protective functions.
