Icon - Saint Martyr Zenaida - Wood

Late 19th century Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saint Martyr Zenaida standing beside a child figure, rendered in the traditional manner with elongated proportions and restrained palette against a dark ground. The saint raises her hand in blessing while holding a martyr’s cross, with Christ appearing in the upper left corner within a celestial cloud formation. The partially worn Church Slavonic inscription identifies the figure as “St. Mch. Zina,” interpreted as Saint Martyr Zenaida.

Executed in tempera on wood panel with a red border and original wooden battens verso. The icon displays characteristic devotional wear throughout, including scattered paint losses, craquelure, abrasions, and surface wear consistent with age and use, particularly to the faces, inscription, and borders. A compelling example of late Imperial Russian provincial icon painting with strong devotional character.
