Description from the seller
Exceptionally signed copy on the front matter by Hans Silvester, unique and unattainable elsewhere on the Internet. 416 pages and nearly 380 full-page color photographs, with Hans Silvester’s French introductory text. Firm sky-blue hardcover with the title embossed in white on the back and with a illustrated dust jacket. In Excellent condition.
Whether in the sun taking a nap, alone or in a group, Hans Silvester’s cats express the same happiness. The joy of running, of hunting, of sleeping on cool stone. The joy of simply living. (from the back cover). I would add that in photographing these cats, Hans Silvester was also photographing the Greece of the islands.
Hans Silvester was born in 1938 in Lörrach in the Black Forest in Germany, very close to Switzerland, and he graduated from the Fribourg School of Photography in 1955. He settled in Provence in the early 1960s while traveling the world, photographing populations in their diversity and publishing many quality photography books. He joined the Rapho agency in 1965. From the 1980s onward, Hans Silvester directed his work toward environmental activism, denouncing the ravages of deforestation in the Amazon, and publishing a long report on a Provencal river under the title “The Murdered River.” Hans Silvester is a photographer still active, and in recent years he has produced numerous books on the peoples of the Omo Valley in Ethiopia.
Hans Silvester received the International Albert Kahn Planet Prize in December 2022 for his entire career and for his testimony of a era from 1960 to today. “Thanks to his openness to the world, the sharpness of his photographer’s eye, and his sense of beauty, he transmits to us iconic images representing people from everyday life, witnesses to a culture, a place, a moment… The photographer’s eye freezes a fleeting moment to remind us of what constitutes our history. In this respect, he is at once an artist, a sociologist, a historian, a defender of cultures and of nature through an approach based on trust and observation.” (retourdevoyage.com)
