Presented for auction by Second Vintage

This Omega Genève reference 166.0120 captures the quintessential design language of early 1970s watchmaking, offering a robust tonneau case profile and practical everyday complications. Positioned as a versatile and reliable timepiece, the Genève line was historically significant for bringing Omega's renowned in-house mechanical excellence to a broader audience. This specific example, powered by the high-beat Caliber 1022, represents a charming piece of vintage horology that wears its history openly, appealing to collectors who appreciate authentic, unrestored character alongside impressive mechanical performance.

Brand: Omega
Model: Genève
Reference Number: 166.0120
Serial Number: 35117148
Movement: Automatic Caliber 1022
Dial: Silver sunburst dial with applied indices, showing visible spotting and age-related wear
Case Size: 35 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Production Year: 1972
Condition: Good vintage condition with honest wear and distinct dial patina. Recently serviced, it is exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency

Dial and Hands
The watch features a classic silver sunburst dial accented by applied faceted hour markers with black central inserts, providing strong legibility. A framed day and date aperture is positioned at three o'clock. The dial typography features a printed Omega logo and "Genève" script in a crisp sans-serif font. Upon close inspection, the dial exhibits clear signs of aging and environmental exposure, with distinct spotting, staining, and surface discoloration concentrated predominantly on the right hemisphere around the day-date window and the upper quadrant. The black painted baton hands remain intact and functional, while the original luminous material on both the hands and the dial perimeter plots has degraded and darkened over time, consistent with its vintage nature.

Case and Crystal
The 35mm stainless steel case features a distinct tonneau or C-shape profile characteristic of the era. The case retains its factory brushing on the upper surfaces, which transitions to polished case flanks. The case lines remain well-defined, though they display honest handling marks, light surface scratches, and minor softening consistent with decades of wear. The original fluted crown is correctly signed with the Omega emblem. The watch is fitted with a domed acrylic crystal that proudly bears the tiny, engraved Omega logo at its center, a delightful detail for collectors. The screw-down stainless steel caseback features a brushed center and polished outer ring, with the interior correctly stamped with the reference number 166 0120.

Movement
Inside beats the in-house Omega Caliber 1022, a sophisticated automatic movement known for its copper-colored plating and reliable day-date functionality. Close-up images reveal the movement's serial number, 35117148, which dates the production of this timepiece to approximately 1972. The movement presents cleanly, showcasing Omega's signature finishing techniques of the period. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece, the timegrapher results indicate a deviation of +8 to +11 seconds per day with strong amplitude. Recently serviced.

Strap
The watch is paired with a contemporary black leather strap featuring prominent white contrast stitching. The strap complements the black accents on the dial and hands, providing a comfortable and secure fit on the wrist while enhancing the watch's versatile aesthetic.

Condition
This timepiece is presented in good vintage condition. The stainless steel case remains structurally sound with normal signs of use, while the dial displays significant, visible age-related patina, spotting, and surface wear that tells the story of its long life. The mechanical health of the watch is a strong highlight, running exceptionally well for its age.

Dimensions
The case measures 35 mm in diameter, excluding the signed crown. The tonneau shape provides a substantial presence on the wrist, wearing slightly larger than traditional round cases of the same measurement, making it an excellent fit for modern sensibilities.

Remarks
This Omega Genève is a testament to the enduring appeal of 1970s Swiss watchmaking. It is a piece that does not hide its age, offering a rugged, lived-in aesthetic paired with a highly capable and precise in-house movement. It is an excellent candidate for the vintage enthusiast who values mechanical integrity and authentic, unpolished charm.

History
The Omega Genève collection was introduced in 1953 as a tribute to the brand's workshops in Geneva, which were responsible for producing the most rigorous and highly regulated movements. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Genève line had evolved into Omega's most expansive and diverse family of watches, capturing the dynamic styling of the era. These models were instrumental in cementing Omega's reputation for producing durable, stylish, and mechanically superior timepieces for the everyday wearer. Today, they are celebrated by collectors as accessible yet horologically significant entry points into the golden age of Omega's independent manufacturing.
