Description from the seller

Viking Iron Axe Head
c. 9th–11th century A.D.

A rare and heavily forged Viking Age iron axe head dating to approximately the 9th–11th century AD. This striking example features a compact triangular blade with a deep curved beard and a thick, elongated socket, characteristic of functional Scandinavian fighting and utility axes of the early medieval period.
Hand-forged in iron, the axe displays a robust and practical form designed for durability and control. The broad cutting edge and tapered lower section reflect traditional Norse blacksmithing methods, while the substantial socket indicates mounting on a sturdy wooden haft. Pieces of this compact style are associated with Viking-era woodworking, camp use, and close combat applications.
The artefact retains an excellent excavated appearance with deep age patina, mineral accretions, visible hammer-forged texture, and stable oxidation throughout. The socket remains intact, and the blade profile is still clearly recognisable despite age-related surface wear and edge loss.
Excavated condition with heavy age wear, stable corrosion, and surface pitting; structurally intact overall with strong display presence.
An authentic Viking Age axe head with impressive character and unmistakable Norse form — a desirable piece for collectors of Viking artefacts, medieval weaponry, and ancient ironwork.
