Description from the seller
The painting presents a half-length portrait of an elderly officer, most likely belonging to a hussar regiment, as suggested by the richness and type of decorations on the uniform. The figure emerges from a dark, neutral background, in keeping with a convention typical of nineteenth-century portraiture that concentrates attention on the face and attire. The man has white, voluminous, and slightly disheveled hair, and a face aged by time, with a direct gaze but veiled by fatigue, almost melancholic. The thin moustache and the lean features contribute to delineating an austere personality, perhaps accustomed to military discipline.
The uniform is the most distinctive element: a dark jacket adorned with elaborate intertwined gold lacework, typical of the hussars, light cavalry units widespread in Central and Eastern Europe between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These decorative elements, besides their aesthetic function, indicated rank and membership in a prestigious corps, often tied to aristocratic traditions. The white collar and black bow add a tone of formal elegance, while the meticulous rendering of the embroidery reveals the painter's interest in material and ornamental details.
From a stylistic standpoint, the work plausibly dates to the first half of the nineteenth century, in a milieu between Northern Italy and the Austro-Hungarian area, where this type of uniform was particularly widespread. The painting is realistic but not idealized: the face is not beautified, but rendered with sincerity, letting emerge the marks of time and experience. Good preservation state of the painting, dimensions 65x53 cm.
Accurate packing and shipping guaranteed.
