Description from the seller
Ancient terracotta figure made of red clay with light brown slip, Jalisco culture, West Mexico. This is a so-called shaft-tomb figure; these pieces were intended to be part of the burial goods of the deceased and were therefore found almost exclusively in graves. This factor was decisive for their preservation to this day and has led to them being practically all intact and looking as they did at the time of their original manufacture.
- With certificate of authenticity and provenance information
Dating: ca 200 BCE - 250 CE
Culture: Jalisco culture, West Mexico
Material: Terracotta
Height: 9.6 cm
Weight: 74.99 g
Provenance:
Auction house
Previous:
- 2025 Spanish private collection from Barcelona
- 1950 - 2025 private collection of Dr. David Harner from Nevada, USA
The cultures that developed in this region as well as in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit between the years 200 BCE and 600 CE are regarded as part of the same cultural current due to connections and similarities in their burial practices, such as their shaft tombs, and their artistic production, especially their pottery.
The West Mexican cultures stand out from other Pre-Columbian cultures for their enormous production of ceramics of unparalleled quality and diversity.
The spectrum of types and motifs depicted in the ceramics of Colima, Nayarit, and Jalisco cultures is very broad. The pieces were of great use for expanding knowledge about the traditions and practices of these Mesoamerican peoples.
